I used to think of thankfulness as something that I would experience after receiving a gift on Christmas. And hey, that's still true for sure.

But now there's an added definition of thankfulness that puts my entire life in perspective.

For example, I'm thankful for a mattress and my own bedroom. I'm thankful for the subway stop right outside my front door.

I'm thankful for leftovers.

I'm thankful for a stranger's smile on the train, or an encouraging text message from a friend or family member.

Some say that life gets more complicated as one gets older, but I am seeing life blissfully simplified into two categories: what counts and what doesn't.

I have what counts; and from where I stand, that means that life is pretty great.
